Illusione -R- Rothchildes (4.5 x 50)

Wrapper: Mexican San Andrés Maduro

Binder: Nicaraguan

Filler: Nicaraguan

Blender: Dion Giolito

The Illusione -R- Rothchildes is a new offering from Illusione for 2013. The concepts behind the cigar, however, are not new – and this is done with purposeful intent. Nicaraguan fillers with a Mexican San Andrés Maduro wrapper can be found on a few cigars in the market so there should be a familiarity to the cigar. On the other hand, it is a new blend. Of course this was the goal of this cigar. A very traditional cigar in a new blend, or as the Illusione website put it: “An old beginning”

The traditional feel of this cigar goes beyond the blend itself. The size of the cigar is a very traditional 4.5 x 50 Rothchildes. The more traditional Cuban cigar sizes have always been the sizes of choice for Illusione blender Dion Giolito who has been quoted as saying: “I’m all for the 54 plus ring sizes to go away. I’m not a big fan.” This is good news for the smaller ring fans out there who prefer the more traditional Cuban sizes. Also, in accordance to the Cuban tradition, this is not supposed to be a powerhouse cigar. The look of the cigar should also be familiar due in part to the band. The design is very reminiscent of the classic Henry Clay band.

This cigar is not part of any line. There are no plans to make this cigar in other vitolas. This is a stand alone cigar. Everything from the band to the blend to the packaging is for this cigar alone. No other cigar from Illusione is like this cigar.

This cigar has veins. There seems to be randomly directed striations all over the wrapper of the cigar. The wrapper looks rough and maybe a bit muddled. “Rustic” may be the correct word for it. The band has a gold boarder with red and white background and print, designed after the Henry Clay band (as mentioned above). The cap is not level. It seems a bit lumpy in places.

The cigar feels firm in the hand but not hard. There is a bit of an oval shape to it, though I am not sure this is intentional. The band comes off with little effort. The smell is light but still reminds me of dry grass with a slightly sweet note to it. The lick on the cap is slightly sour at first but quickly sweetens. The flavor of the cap is a bit on the damp earth side. After a clip with my Xi2 I have a draw that is almost perfect. It is ever so slightly too tight but it is just a preference at this point. The dry grass note in the unlit smell is again in the cold draw but now it also has a distinct barnyard quality with slightly woody feel.

A toast with a soft flame goes easily. The first few puffs have a woody taste to it with a touch of pulpy texture. There is a vegetable style sweet undertone especially through the nose. As the cigar opens up and gets going the woody notes turn out. There is a green feel to it like the way very green new-growth wood smells. The Nicaraguan texture is there but subtle and light. It is quite enjoyable.

The middle third has a slight desiccant quality to it. This works well with the oak flavors and slight spice on the finish. This all has a vegetable quality under it all that lingers into the finish giving the finish the veggie note and the slight spice. Through the nose it is all woody and slightly spicy like many classic Nicaraguan cigars.

The final third brings on a more peppery spice that invades every place on the palate. It is not hot or intrusive. It is a welcome change near the end. The desiccant nature is still there and the woody notes are also still there but they have toned down. The vegetable sweetness is still in the mix but has left the retrohale. The spice also seems to have a salty note to it. The finish lengthens and holds the spice for quite a while.
